Workshop Announcement: Waterfalls and Fireflies... what a combo!
Join me on both of these trips and receive a special discount!
Spring always feels like a fresh start behind the camera. As winter slips away, forests come alive, waterways pick up their pace, and the whole landscape seems to breath again. The deep greens of the forest and the sound of rushing water are almost overwhelming. Two places in particular seem to shine during this season… one of them quite literally!
If you know me, you already know how much I cherish firefly season in the Great Smoky Mountains. No matter how many times I return, watching the forest ignite with the light of the fireflies never loses its magic. It’s beautiful to photograph, of course, but the real reward is simply standing there and witnessing an otherwise dark landscape pulsing with thousands of tiny flashes.
Then there’s the Finger Lakes of New York. I’ve led two fall workshops in the region, but a family trip in June changed everything. Seeing the waterfalls at full flow, the trails wrapped in lush green, and the crowds pleasantly thinned, I knew I had to return with a group. Early summer reveals a side of the Finger Lakes that feels both peaceful and powerful, perfect conditions for creative work.
This year, I’m excited to share these places at their seasonal best. If you’re looking to reconnect with your craft after a long winter, soak in some beautiful landscapes, and capture images that feel alive, I’d love to have you along.
And… if you join me on both Fireflies of the Great Smoky Mountains and Spring in the Finger Lakes you will receive $400 off registration!
Spring in the Finger Lakes
June 9 - 13, 2026
Join me in the beautiful and incomparable Finger Lakes Region of New York! We will visit several parks and explore the gorges and waterways of this unique landscape while photographing countless waterfalls and cascades. We’ll visit well-known locations such as Rainbow Falls in Watkins Glen State Park, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. The number of cascades and waterfalls in the area is astonishing, and the fairytale views, like that of Rainbow Falls, are plentiful throughout. This workshop will also concentrate on small-scene photography, providing time to photograph more intimate scenes and under-appreciated subjects. You will also learn best practices for photographing waterfalls and flowing water and post-processing techniques that will elevate the impact of your images while staying true to the subject matter.
If joining us on both workshops your discount will be applied when final payments are due.
Fireflies of the Great Smoky Mountains
June 1 - 5, 2026
You’ve likely already heard about this one… half of the spots are already filled - Join me for one of my favorite events of the year… firefly season in the Smokies! The highlight of this workshop is photographing the world-famous synchronous firefly display, a rare natural wonder that happens only once a year and only for about two weeks. After nightfall, beneath a dense canopy of old-growth trees, thousands of fireflies flash in unison, filling the forest. Believe me, it is unlike anything you’ve ever seen… and that is just the beginning! Many species of firefly are active throughout the park at different times and in different places, and we’ll be searching for them all! In addition to photographing fireflies each night, we will also explore some the park’s most iconic landscapes… from tranquil rivers, to grand mountain vistas, and the wildlife-rich meadows of Cades Cove.
